Removing Cosmetic Makeup Tattoos

Over the years Skin Temple has received many referrals from cosmetic tattooists for assistance with patients who have undergone disastrous cosmetic makeup tattoos. Tattooed eyebrow makeup removal is one of the procedures that Skin Temple has developed quite an expertise in, and we can also remove tattooed eyeliner.

Often, the issues will relate to the choice of ink colour used, or the shape/asymmetry of the tattoo, and sometimes it can be that the ink colour has actually changed over the years to something that now looks bright orange..and very unnatural.

One of the joys of my job is that removing an unacceptable cosmetic makeup tattoo is actually quite easy..in general, though not quite always. For some people that just means reshaping the existing tattoo, whilst for others a colour change from orange to medium brown might be sought. Side effects are mild and transient.  Please take a look at our gallery page for some examples of before and after, including what the skin may look like immediately after the treatment.

Fortunately most of the inks used in Australia for permanent makeup are quite amenable to laser removal.

In over 15yrs of removing cosmetic makeup tattoos, we have never had a patient lose their eyebrows as a result of our laser treatment, which is a common concern amongst new patients. However, we have received emailed photos from patients interstate who have had quite disastrous results with tattoo removal of permanent makeup.  **Please don’t use a picosound laser on hair bearing skin. It is definitely worthwhile doing one’s homework in this field, as a poor outcome on top of an already poor outcome is not something that anyone looking for perfect eyebrows expects.

Whether it’s having your eyebrows waxed, or having a longer term procedure like cosmetic makeup tattooing, it’s incredibly important to ensure that your therapist not only has a great aesthetic eye (take a look at their own eyebrows if in doubt) but also has years of hands on experience.

Finally, beware of the commonly given advice to microblade or feather your eyebrows every 12months.  This frequently leads to scar tissue build up around the hair follicles and their delicate blood supply, and can cause further loss of natural eyebrow hairs.  Many of the patients we have seen for advice on laser removal of tattooed eyebrows have histories of recent loss of eyebrow thinning, quite separate from the underlying problem which made them seek tattooing initially.
